Program Committee Hosts "Evolution of PTAB Practice" Webinar - July 23, 2025

On July 23, 2025, the PTAB Bar Association's Program Committee hosted a webinar titled "Evolution of PTAB Practice: Guidance on Discretionary Denials." The panelists discussed recent decisions related to discretionary denials, including factors such as settled expectations, trial dates, the presence of parallel proceedings, and other issues. Panelists also examined approaches to navigate the most recent Board decisions on discretionary denials, including a consideration of jurisdictions with aggressive scheduling orders and expedited timing. Panelists also discussed how PTAB’s current approach has impacted their strategic decision-making processes and what, if any, changes might improve the overall process. The panelists include Mishima Alam, Google; Charles Davis, Amazon; Nicholas Kim, Microsoft; and David Roadcap, Amgen. The program was moderated by Frederic Meeker, Banner Witcoff.  Logged-in members of the PTAB Bar Association can access the slide deck from the presentation at the following members-only link: Program Committee, Evolution of PTAB Practice: Guidance on Discretionary Denials (July 23, 2025).

About the PTAB Bar Association
The PTAB Bar Association is a voluntary bar association of over 700 members, most of whom are in private and corporate practice. Members represent a broad spectrum of individuals, companies, and institutions involved in practice before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB”) of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (“USPTO”) and in patent, administrative, and appellate law more generally.  The Association is dedicated to helping secure the just, speedy, and inexpensive resolution of every PTAB proceeding, and serves as an avenue for constructive dialogue between the bar community, the PTAB, and other stakeholders.
