Program Committee Hosts "A Roadmap To Institution Webinar" - January 13, 2026
On January 13, 2026, the Program Committee hosted a webinar titled "A Roadmap To Institution: A Review Of Recent Institution Decisions And Policy Based Discussions" exploring key developments as a result of Director Squires’s recent institution decisions, including strategic considerations for practitioners navigating these decisions, and what early data from Squires’s instituted reviews may suggest about future trends. Topics included the role of settled expectations, parallel proceedings, the use (or absence) of written explanations in Squires’s decisions, early indicators of how discretionary factors are being weighed in practice, as well as what practitioners believe might improve predictability in institution decision-making going forward. Panelists included Hon. Kalyan Deshpande, Acting Chief Administrative Patent Judge, USPTO; Buddy Toliver, Cisco Systems, Inc.; Timur Engin, Google; and Frank Bernstein, Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP. This webinar was moderated by Frederic Meeker, Banner & Witcoff.Logged-in members of the PTAB Bar Association can access the slide deck from this presentation at the following members-only link: Program Committee, A Roadmap to Institution: A Review of Recent Institution Decisions and Policy Based Discussions (January 13, 2026).
About the PTAB Bar Association
The PTAB Bar Association is a voluntary bar association of over 700 members, most of whom are in private and corporate practice. Members represent a broad spectrum of individuals, companies, and institutions involved in practice before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB”) of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (“USPTO”) and in patent, administrative, and appellate law more generally. The Association is dedicated to helping secure the just, speedy, and inexpensive resolution of every PTAB proceeding, and serves as an avenue for constructive dialogue between the bar community, the PTAB, and other stakeholders.
